A standard deck of 52 cards is used with some variations adding jokers to the mix. The cards are ranked (Ace high, Queen, King, Jack, 10, 9, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 &#038; 1). Some games have wild cards that can take the place of any other card.<\/p>\n<p>The first player to receive a card becomes the dealer and shuffles the deck. Players may cut the shuffled pack as they wish and can also do so after each hand to advance the deal process.<\/p>\n<p>After the first betting round is complete the dealer puts a third community card on the board that everyone can use, this is called the flop. A second round of betting then takes place.<\/p>\n<p>A fourth community card is then put on the board, this is the turn and another chance for players to bet\/check\/raise or fold. Finally a fifth card is revealed which is known as the river. If players have a poker hand the best one wins the pot.<\/p>\n<p>Playing poker and observing other players is a great way to develop quick instincts and build your comfort level with risk-taking. If you are a new player it is often a good idea to stick with low-stakes games and work your way up. This is especially important if you are playing in an environment that encourages aggressive play.
